Character Strengths Matter: How to Live a Full Life by Shannon Polly @ Insperity Tysons Corner Office

Character Strengths Matter: How to Live a Full Life by Shannon Polly @ Insperity Tysons Corner Office | McLean | Virginia | United States

Character Strengths Matter: How to Live a Full Life is the third book in the Positive Psychology News (PPND) series, joining Resilience: How to Navigate Life’s Curves and Gratitude: How to Appreciate Life’s Gifts.

This new book illustrates each character strength with one or two articles from PPND.  We give 5 actions for building the strength derived from Tayyab Rashid’s wonderful list.  We also do something that is a bit unusual.  We include a speech, a monolog from a play, or a poem for people to read out loud to help the character strength come alive in their minds.  There is a brief section explaining why it is valuable to read these speeches out loud, giving a voice to the strength, even embodying it.  The intended audience is the general public, not just positive psychology enthusiasts.

This book has been endorsed by Dr. Martin E. P. Seligman, who says:

“My friend, Chris Peterson, would have loved this book. It brings to life with personal stories, practical recommendations, wisdom, and humor the dry scholarship that he (with an assist from me) did in the Classification of Strengths and Virtues. Chris was very down-to-earth and I am sure he would have concurred in my enthusiastically recommending this book to everyone who works with character strengths in the real world.”

– Dr. Martin E. P. Seligman, author of Authentic Happiness & Flourish

“This is what is so stunning about this book:  it’s the best experiential or applied introduction to the psychology of human strengths that I’ve seen.  I learned from this book – by performing it, not just reading it.  This tiny volume has magic in it.”

– Dr. David L. Cooperrider, Case Western Reserve University & The David L. Cooperrider Center for Appreciative Inquiry at Champlain College

“This is an extraordinary book—extraordinary in that it includes the latest research on character strengths but goes well beyond that.  It provides five practice guidelines applicable to each strength and, importantly, provides examples, monologueues, poems, and speeches that realistically illustrate each strength.  Polly and Britton have provided a tremendous service to the field of positive psychology and positive education by combining scholarship, practice, and illustrations in a way that has not appeared heretofore.  I highly recommend this book.”

– Dr. Kim Cameron, William Russell Kelly Professor of Management & Organizations, University of Michigan, author of Positive Leadership
